Here’s the Scoop!

Bernie Davis - The Back to Basics Story
This is a picture of us in our bookstore.
Thank you for allowing us to serve you for so many years!

This is probably the most difficult newsletter I’ve had to write.  Thank you for your encouragement and for your faithful support for us.  Over the last 30 years, the message of Back to Basics Christian Bookstore has seen lives saved, marriages repaired, prisoners restored, suicides called off, addicts freed and thousands of people have found Christ.

We’ve enjoyed the opportunity to take care of you!  It’s hard to admit the struggle, but the internet, changing media formats, consumer buying patterns and publisher price erosion have caused tremendous havoc in our industry.

We have a heart to continue and would be overjoyed to be able to find a way to keep Back To Basics Christian Bookstore in the community.  At this point, we’re looking to leave our home of 33 years unless there’s a Divine Intervention.

There are three ways this can happen:

1.)  With a donated location and volunteers, we have the expertise and desire to continue to serve the community as your local Christian retailer.  However, it is impossible for us to go on at our current location.  The expenses are too high and our margins too narrow to justify our existence.   Therefore, we need a location that is either very low rent or free.

2.)  With pro-bono legal help, we can reorganize and re-emerge as a non-profit organization.

3.)  If anyone wants to buy our business, it would bring us a great deal of joy knowing the mission and ministry will continue on, especially since we are the last Christian bookstore for hundreds of miles to the North, South and West

As I write this, I remember when the St. Louis Christian music radio station, “The Bridge” “104.9 WCBW was sold.  The people in St. Louis liked the idea of having a Christian music radio station.  So they came together and created listener supported, “Joy FM”.

We are in a similar situation.  If any of you wants to help make this happen, please let us know.  It’s not over, ’til it’s over!  However, at this point it looks like we’re about to have the greatest sale of the century.  Please sign up for our e-mail list if you want updates on the sale as it progresses.  You can sign up for the bookstore e-mail list here:

It would be a gift to us if you could help spread the word.  Paid advertising is very costly and by sharing this email to others, you are helping us make our last few days here on Highway K a fantastic time for everyone!

What do you think of Back to Basics Christian Bookstore?  Do you want us to move?  If so, where?

This was taken when we were still getting our first location renovated and ready to open.  You can tell from the government issued permit stickers in the windows.  This picture was taken in 1988.

This is from our grand opening on Highway K, where we’ve been since 1995.  Pictured from L to R:  My dad – Gordon Gosh, my mom – Marylin Gosh, O’Fallon Alderman Carl Young,  the lady we bought this land from – Dorothy Cassidy, Me, Mayor Paul Renaud, Husband – Bernie, Son – John, Daughter – Cathryn and O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce member, Darrell Emge.

WHAT YOU CAN DO…

1.)   Pray for us.  We haven’t heard yet where God is leading next, but your prayers are appreciated.

2.)  Come by and shop!  We have a lot of inventory and great prices!  Help the cause by making one last great big purchase!

3.)  Spread the word to everyone you know.  It costs a lot of money to advertise.  Please help us by sharing this e-mail with everyone who may be interested in knowing.  Print it out and post it on your Church bulletin board.  Share on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat or just tell your neighbors.  Every effort you extend to let others know will be a ministry.

4.)  If  you have a space or know of someone who has a space they would like to donate for us to continue to operate out of, please contact us very soon.  You can simply reply to this email or call us at 636-978-3800.

5.)  I will now have more time to work on other ways to encourage people.  If you have an event where you need a speaker, please let me know.  I am dedicating my energy on the places where I can make the greatest difference.  Please let the meeting organizer know that I can help your group understand the intersection of government and families in a way they may have never known before.  If you want me to come and help your efforts to educate and motivate your network, please click this button here:

6.)   The Home Front newsletter will continue.   However, we need your involvement to fund our ongoing efforts, research and equipment.  If you want to continue to support us in this effort, you can mail a check to this address:

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR

Will be praying and so sorry to hear this news. Holy Cross Lutheran of O’Fallon has had Rose’s Bookstore in their Red building for many years. A building like that would be hopefully low rent on a church property and would help you or you could live above a storefront in one of our cities. Maybe the Chesterfield Mall would give you a good deal.
