Students from Assumption Catholic School Visit the Capitol

Last week, Assumption Catholic School had spring break.  As a result, I had some extra special visitors, Andrew, Nicolas and Mathew Gentry, Brett Polinske and my daughter, Susanna.  We're standing on the side gallery of the House Chamber while bills are debated.  These boys are all the grandsons of Don Morrison, a former lobbyist for the St. Charles County Municipal League when I was in local government.  I made them "Honorary Pages of the Day" to serve with compensation from their grandfather.  (I think he bought them lunch!)

Tax Freedom Day

Wouldn't it be nice if April 15th were just another day on the calendar?  My husband said when he dies I can put on his tombstone, "No more death and no more taxes!"  When we look at the current economic downturn and high unemployment, it is remarkable that some still seek to raise our taxes.  However, there is some small consolation in knowing that unlike the national government, our state cannot raise taxes without a vote of the people.

Tax Freedom Day answers the basic question, "What price is the nation paying for government?" An official government figure for total tax collections is divided by the nation's total income. The answer this year is that taxes will amount to 26.89 percent of our income, and the stretch of 99 days from January 1 to April 9 is 26.89 percent of the year. Overall, Americans will pay more taxes in 2010 than they will spend on food, clothing and shelter combined.

While we were debating the budget, a representative who sits in front of me had "The Debt Clock" on his desktop.  Congress has taken us to a point where our finances are so out of control; it is as though they made it their goal to destroy the economy of the greatest nation ever and as quickly as possible!  If you want to see how much debt the politicians in Washington DC are racking up every second, click here:  National Debt Clock

Missouri's Sales Tax Holiday April 19-25

My mother told me she wants to replace her 35 year old dishwasher.  (And she's not talking about my dad!)  Here's my advice to her:  Do your research now and then buy one next week when you don't have to pay any sales tax on it.   This is called The Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday April 19-25. Those who purchase new ENERGY STARR qualified appliances in Missouri during those dates will not pay the state's sales tax on the purchase.

Some manufacturers offer rebates on purchases of ENERGY STARR appliances, and local appliance retailers might offer additional special during the week of the tax holiday. For more information on this program, go to: Appliance Rebates

How many Tenth Amendments does it take for Cynthia Davis to screw in a light bulb?

Tenth Amendment fanatic Cynthia Davis, R-O'Fallon is at it again, filing a bill which would protect the rights of Missourians to own light bulbs (and apparently this will convince the people in her senatorial district to vote for a dim bulb.)

Mrs. Davis' bill, HB 2468, the Freedom to Own Light Bulbs Act, includes the following passage:

1) Amendment X of the Constitution of the United States guarantees to the states and their people all powers not granted to the federal government elsewhere in the Constitution and reserves to the state and people of Missouri certain powers as they were understood at the time that Missouri was admitted to statehood. The guarantee of those powers is a matter of contract between the state and people of Missouri and the United States as of the time that the compact with the United States was agreed upon and adopted by Missouri and the United States;

2) Amendment IX of the Constitution of the United States guarantees to the people rights.

3) The regulation of intrastate commerce is vested in the states under Amendments IX and X of the Constitution of the United States, particularly if not expressly preempted by federal law. Congress has not expressly preempted state regulation of intrastate commerce pertaining to the manufacture on an intrastate basis of lightbulbs or lightbulb accessories;

4) A lightbulb or lightbulb accessory that is manufactured commercially or privately in Missouri and that remains within the borders of Missouri is not subject to federal law or federal regulation, including registration, under the authority of congress to regulate interstate commerce.

5) A lightbulb manufactured or sold in Missouri under the provisions of this section shall have the words "Made in Missouri" clearly stamped.

Political experts say this daring move will enable Mrs. Davis to corner the market among those who don't know watt they're talking about.

GE Whiz! Doesn't she realize there are actually serious issues that need to be discussed?

Now for the interpretation:  This attempt to marginalize ideas demonstrates how far some will go to pull the shade down on what is happening in our country.  Perhaps most people are not aware that our national government is further weakening our economy by now dictating how we illuminate our homes.  If we left it up to them, they would probably outlaw burning candles as well because they could emit smoke, especially if you extinguish them in a "politically incorrect" manner.

Wait until you attempt to purchase a light bulb for your favorite lamp in another year or more and discover that our federal government has outlawed its existence.  This federal bill was passed and signed into law a few years ago.  Most people have yet to be affected by it because the prohibition begins in 2012.  The negative consequences of this law have already brought harm to our area. The Boone Center Sheltered Workshop, a vital employer of the handicapped, used to assemble these types of light bulbs and now that business has been eliminated.

These fluorescent bulbs do not last as long as advertised, and since they contain mercury, you're not supposed dispose of them in your trash; mercury is considered toxic waste!

My bill simply says that what is manufactured in Missouri and used in Missouri is not subject to federal mandates.  For years the national government has been on a trend of overstepping its jurisdiction, behaving like a meddling mother-in-law in every detail of our lives.  Uncle Sam went from being our protector to being "the Big Brother" and "The Sugar Daddy". It appears he won't be satisfied until he is "The Slave Master".

A Little Bit of Humor . . .

Q: How many Psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Only one, but the bulb has got to really WANT to change.

Q: How many software people does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: None. That's a hardware problem.

A: Two. One always leaves in the middle of the project.

Q: How many `Real Men' does it take to change a light bulb?

A: None: `Real Men' aren't afraid of the dark.

Q: How many `Real Women' does it take to change a light bulb?

A: None: A `Real Woman' would have plenty of real men around to do it.
