Ultrasona Ribbon Cutting

Representative Davis with the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce and staff of Ultrasona located in the Plaza at Hutchings Farm on Highway K in O’Fallon at their ribbon cutting ceremony.

Ultrasona offers affordable access to superior prenatal ultrasound. They perform medical diagnostic scans, including three and four dimensional ultrasound imaging. Patients enjoy friendly faces from both staff and their unborn babies.

While at the ribbon cutting, I asked the owner, Michelle Huesemann, about her billing practices.  They do not go through the red tape procedure of billing insurance companies.  Everybody who wants to get a look at the baby just pays for it.  A very refreshing concept.  And the price?  Ultrasounds start at $50 dollars to get your first peek at your new baby.  What a deal.  This is proof that the enterprising spirit of America is still alive.  This approach is part of the solution to high prices for health care.

We will never drive healthcare costs down so long as we have outside parties providing the main method of payment.  It anesthetizes the consumer to the costs of healthcare.  When the consumers don’t know or care about the price, there is no incentive to economize.  Our current system encourages over-consumption of services and reduces the desire for the providers to lower their prices.  Most providers offer a “special discount” to the insurance companies and the people left paying full price are those unfortunate ones with no insurance at all.  We have created a system that allows the poorest among us to pay the highest amount.  How fair is that?  So long as we defy the principles of free markets, our system is doomed to many more financial hardships and disappointments.

On the other hand, I am so impressed with of all our business owners who remain undaunted by the economic conditions.  Most of the businesses I know are struggling, yet committed to toughing it out.  It is great we are still having ribbon cuttings in O’Fallon. Those in the private sector boldly stand as a statement that our free markets are still functioning.  I am proud of all of you!

Little Bit of Humor

The seven-year old girl told her mom, "A boy in my class asked me to play doctor."

"Oh, dear," the mother nervously sighed. "What happened, honey?"

"Nothing, he made me wait 45 minutes and then double-billed the insurance company."
