Meet the Chair Of

 The Children and Families Committee

The Speaker of the House has appointed me Chair of the Special Committee on Children and Families.  This is a great honor.  Chairing a committee is a huge responsibility that involves working hard to bring good legislation to the floor.  Committees are the heart of “the sausage factory.”   The committees hear bills and work out problems with philosophy, unintended consequences and grammatical errors.  Committee members evaluate bills and, if a majority of them agree a bill is worthy legislation, it could go to the House floor for full debate among the 163 representatives. Theoretically, the more work we do in our committee, the fewer problems and fewer amendments will emerge during full floor debate.

Last session, the committee was renamed “Family Services.”  I asked the speaker to return it to its original name, “Children and Families Committee.”  While this may not seem like a big change, the philosophical distinction is enormous.  “Family Services” sounds like the committee is focused on governmental intervention into the family.  “Children and Families” is more descriptive of how our public policies affect our children and families in the state of Missouri for better or worse.

In addition to serving the House of Representatives as the Chair of the Children and Families Committee, I have also been appointed to be on the Health Care Policy Committee, the Elections Committee and the Special Committee on State Parks and Waterways.

Even though my plate will be very full, I am very grateful to be continuing my service on the Elections Committee.  With all the shenanigans happening across the country in various elections, it is more important than ever that we have principled people guiding our election process.  The state of Minnesota has been embarrassed by its inability to conduct a fair recount.  When George W. Bush won in 2000, the sore losers claimed it was the hanging chad.  Now that we have spent millions of dollars to replace punch cards, Minnesota is proving that there are many other ways to dispute election results.  Click here for more on this story:  Funny Business in Minnesota.

For those of you who are watching the national scene, the integrity with which we handle these important elections does not become a big issue until something goes wrong and the national spotlight is on us.  Having good procedures in place will keep Missouri from being a national spectacle.  More importantly, fair elections are the bedrock of any honest government.

A Few Bullet Points

Several of you have written me with concerns over proposed legislation that will require serial numbers on ammunition.  This is another way to create hardships on gun owners.  Our country has survived for centuries without needing to put special codes on bullets.  If our founding fathers could see us now, they would certainly raise their eyebrows and ask how we could be serious.

This proposal is wasteful, labor intensive and does nothing to actually stop crime.  If you would like to read more on what this legislation would do, click here:  Encoded Ammunition Fact Sheet.

You can trust that I will not support anything such as this proposal.  While the idea of this legislation is alarming, it has little chance of coming to the floor for debate, unless the point of the debate would be to soundly defeat such a bill.  It is not too unusual for legislators to introduce legislation that borders on the ridiculous, but that is their right to offer any proposal for discussion.  Passing a law like this would be like putting our good citizens in handcuffs.  You can be confident that the freedom-loving Missouri legislators will hold the line on protecting our liberties.

Your thoughts are important to me, so please let me know if you have any questions about the committees or the bullet coding bill..  You can send me your opinion by clicking hereCynthia Davis.
