Missouri’s Budget

Last week, a constituent asked me where to find information about Missouri’s budget.  As of now, it looks like our state funds will be coming in below projection.  This is not a crisis, but part of a financial ebb and flow.  It is certainly no excuse for attempting to access our emergency fund.  The pendulum is swinging away now, but our situation has been worse before and the pendulum will swing back in time.

Every business knows that some years will be better than others, and government is no different.  I am satisfied that our budget office staff is doing the best job that they can in making budget estimates, especially considering our present economic circumstances.

Most important, any government budget should be accessible to the public.  Transparency is the key to engaging our citizens in a dialogue about the best choice of budget priorities.  Our spending should be open to scrutiny by the taxpayers.  After all, it’s your money.

If you would like to know where the dollars come from and go to in your state government, click on this link:  2009 Missouri Budget.  On this informative web page, you can find summaries of the state budget as well as the operating budget of each state department.

Your Own Economic Stimulus

File Size: 276 KBWe can all do something to help improve the economy.    Although the trend shows that more people are shopping online than ever before,   you can get some things locally that you cannot get online.

1.      1.  Unique items that are produced locally by our own artists and authors.

2.      2.  Friendly, courteous service from those you know and trust.

3.      The satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting your neighbors, schools, libraries, and cities, thereby helping with our employment statistics.

4.      Your purchase is “in stock” and in your hands now.

5.      Reasonable prices.  Despite the perception to the contrary, local merchants often sell their goods for lower prices, especially when the cost of shipping is considered.

6.      No damage in shipping.  After waiting a week for your order to arrive - hoping the post office didn’t tear apart the envelope and hoping it is really the right item - is it really worth the trouble?

7.      Local economic benefits that come back to you.  When people shop locally, the money stays in our county.  If we were able to mark the dollars, we would find that some of the money spent on Christmas presents then goes into paychecks.  That money gets spent at the local grocery store and lands in the paychecks of those who work there.  Some of that money may be spent at the chiropractor or the dentist or put into the offering plate at the local church.  Some of it goes to pay taxes.  The government uses some of that to pave our roads so we can drive to work to earn more money.  The cycle goes on.  In general, the math behind this model shows that we do more to benefit the larger picture when we invest in each other.

Illinois Ethics

File Size: 62 KBWith all the unscrupulous activity going on with the Illinois governor, take heart.  Some elected officials make honesty and integrity their top priority.  I am one.  Having been in both local and state government for almost fifteen years, I have always endeavored to serve my constituents and remain above board.  While it saddens me to even imagine the Illinois governor in handcuffs, many feel a sense of relief that justice is being served.  In our legal system, the governor is innocent until proven guilty, but it still reminds us of the benefits of living in a civil society where faithfulness is rewarded and the guilty are punished in the end.  We taxpayers got our money’s worth from the FBI this week.

Mathematical Equivalents…

What Is One Billion?

According to a recent government publication ...

A billion seconds ago Harry Truman was president.

A billion minutes ago was just after the time of Christ.

A billion hours ago man had not yet walked on earth.

A billion dollars ago was late yesterday at the U.S. Treasury.
