What Does “Drill, Baby, Drill” Mean?

For some, “Drill, baby, drill” means more jobs.  For others, it means lower prices at the pump.  For all of us, it means using our natural endowments to bolster the general prosperity of our country. Recently, gas prices were headed in the right direction.  Then the hurricanes came and now we are back to paying a lot of money to fill our gas tanks.  Despite my efforts to conserve fuel by combining errands and driving slower, I am still confronted with the old “needle is on empty” condition.  As we approach winter and the value of the dollar is falling, it seems less likely we will ever see gas under $3.00 per gallon again.

Occasionally, a constituent will call me and ask why gasoline prices are spiking. Even as a state representative, I am not privy to any special inside scoop.  However, people do send me informational articles. Sometimes I feel the way parents or teachers feel when two children are telling opposing views of a story.  Sometimes I can imagine how both perspectives could be possible.  Other times, the stories are so contradictory that it appears one person is attempting to spin, twist or distort the truth.

A number of reasons have combined to create the gasoline pricing hardships we are experiencing.  Among these are:

  • Intentional constriction of supply,
  • Devalued dollars,
  • Increased demand from China and India,
  • “Futures” stock market speculation,
  • No new refineries built in America since 1976,
  • Our own government hoarding oil in oversized reserves, and
  • Our own government denying us the opportunity to explore for oil and natural gas on land owned by us.

As I attempt to decipher this issue for my constituents, I believe that our country is ready for a new wave of entrepreneurial spirit to emerge and find new and better solutions.

File Size: 558 KB America is endowed with all the energy we need.  It is a matter of using what we have and continuing to research new technologies.  We should all be encouraged about the future use of “clean coal” because our country has been endowed with enough coal to last well into the 22nd century.  Another resource, methane gas, is a byproduct of our landfills.  We only need to learn more about how to capture landfill gas and process it.

Until the technology for these projects and others is available at the street level, we must continue to rely on traditional crude oil technology.  While it frustrates me to pay more for a gallon of gas than a gallon of milk, gasoline is still all we have for now to run most automobiles, trucks, airplanes, and boats.

Furthermore, the cost of gasoline is why grocery prices are higher.  The farmers are paying more to plant, harvest and fertilize their fields.  Then it costs more to transport the food to market.   In addition, many people do not realize how closely natural gas drilling is related to crude oil drilling.  Natural gas prices are rising almost parallel to gasoline.  As these prices rise, we will likely see higher than normal utility prices in the colder months ahead.

It makes no sense whatsoever that we would not want to reduce our dependency on foreign sources of oil and promote oil and gas production at home.  Did you know America has three times more petroleum in the shale of Colorado than the entire country of Saudi Arabia?

According to the Institute for Energy Research, the news from Washington is rapidly shifting from one day to the next.  As recently as last week, the U.S. House voted on a law that would permanently prohibit drilling within 50 miles of our shoreline as well as prohibit drilling in Alaska in areas that were never off limits before.  To read what Congress proposed, click here:  Snake Oil Energy SolutionsNow that our federal representatives are starting to hear from us and our dissatisfaction with this proposal, there are signs that they are starting to listen.

Here in Missouri we have no control over drilling in shoreline states.  Therefore, our best line of defense is to promote conserving as much energy as possible.     If you want ideas on making repairs and equipment upgrades that can make your home as energy efficient as possible, visit PSC Consumer Information for more information.

Additionally, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources sponsors a website that has many helpful facts on current fuel conditions and on how to save money: Transportation Information.

The westbound Boone Bridge, I-64/Rte.40, over the Missouri River will be closed for a routine inspection by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) from 5:30 a.m. Sept. 27 until 9:00 p.m. Sept. 28.  The federal government recommends inspecting this bridge each year because it is a truss bridge, the same structure as the bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis.

When traveling westbound, please make plans to use alternate routes.  MoDOT recommends taking Highway 270 to westbound Highway 70 or taking Highway 270 to Page Avenue.

A six-year-old boy called his mother from his friend Charlie's house and confessed he had broken a lamp when he threw a football in their living room.

"But, Mom," he said, brightening, "you don't have to worry about buying another one. Charlie's mother said it was irreplaceable."
