Can Government

Safeguard Our Children?

military, persons, Romans, Sulla, textWe’ve all heard about big brothers protecting their little sisters, but is “big brother government” capable of chaperoning the date?  Because it involves taxpayer money, the answer affects you.  Have you ever taken your teenager to get a physical and had the doctor ask you to step out of the room?  Some professionals are quick to assume that teenagers would more willingly talk to a stranger than to the one who raised them all their lives.  While we all know of families that are in distress, we cannot conclude that all families are riddled with pathology either.

Title V money is a federal tax appropriation that funds programs promoting abstinence.  Title X money is a federal tax appropriation that funds anti-family planning clinics, condoms and contraceptive drug usage.  How is either within the scope of the federal government?  The national government needs to focus on providing for our national defense, securing our borders and finding energy procurement solutions.

Family issues are clearly local.  The family should be the place where children are taught first.  If the family fails, then the extended family can help.  As a last resort, the local churches and civic groups can offer assistance when the family becomes disengaged.  We should never expect our national government to presume to be more knowledgeable about how to raise children than those closest to the children.

You may remember hearing a story last spring of a school board in Portland, Maine that agreed to dispense prescription drugs to minor children (as young as 11 years old) without parental knowledge.  This decision showed disregard for the parents who are financially responsible for any physical damage that could result from these drugs.  All prescription drugs have an assortment of possible side effects, which is why they are only available through a prescription.  The rights of parents are flagrantly disregarded when they are denied the ability to make critical decisions regarding the raising of their own children.  If you want to read more about this story, you can click on the links below:

A Wall Street Journal article recently (June 23, 2008) discussed the proliferation of Planned Parenthood locations in suburban areas.  The article explained that the nonprofit is so flush with cash that it is trying to appeal to more affluent women in upscale areas.  According to the article,

“…Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, reported a record $1 billion in annual revenue in its most recent financial report—about a third of that coming from federal and state grants to care for low-income women.  The nonprofit ended the year with a surplus of $115 million, or about 11 percent of its revenue, and net assets of $952 million….Ms. Hagstrom Miller competes with Planned Parenthood for abortion patients… and finds it deeply frustrating.  She does not receive the government grants or tax-deductible donations that bolster Planned Parenthood, and says she can’t match the non-profit’s budget for advertising or clinic upgrades.”

The article goes on to say that most people are not aware of Planned Parenthood’s original mission to reduce the fertility of poor and minority women who are more densely found in the urban areas.

One flawed premise underlying the federal funding is the notion that a teen pregnancy is considered a negative by teenagers.  The story from Gloucester, Massachusetts, where 17 high school girls reportedly made a pact to get pregnant, shows just the opposite.  While adults may presume that a teen pregnancy is a bad idea, some teenagers think it is rather cool.  This problem cannot be solved by spending additional tax dollars.  To the contrary, the more government tries to get involved, the worse off we all become.  Unless parents take a greater role in their children’s development, there will be harmful consequences.  Here is a quote from Daniel P. Maloney:

“…prescribing contraceptives without parental notification or consent is common practice at school health clinics. In fact, federal law requires it when the minor is eligible for Medicaid, or when the clinic receives Title X funds. The policy is based on the belief that requiring parental consent before a girl can get birth control won’t reduce teen sexual activity at all…This view is unproven, but it has been the foundation of U.S. family planning policy since 1972. And the push to expand school-based health clinics is part of a movement to increase the availability of birth control to minors without their parents’ knowledge or consent…Studies show that teens are less likely to have sex if they think their parents disapprove. But parents are often kept in the dark, thanks to misbegotten health care policies which view them as a threat to their daughter’s best interests.

Our nation’s ‘experts' are spectacularly ill-equipped to deal with teenage girls who want to be mothers. Indeed, laws designed to make contraceptives available to teenagers often make the problem worse. Lawmakers should change these policies — and give parents the opportunity to teach their children well.”

The desire to have government interfere stems from a premise that families are not doing a very good job.  Whenever government steps in, it will do a job less efficiently, more expensively and with less understanding of individual uniqueness.  There is so excuse for our national government trying to take up the slack for every area of our lives, especially when it comes to personal relationships.

Gardasil Vaccine Linked to

Serious Complications

File Size: 38 KBLast session there was a bill introduced regarding a mandate that all Missouri girls in the sixth grade or older be forced to get a Gardasil vaccination for a small strain of a sexually transmitted disease.  Fortunately, the bill did not pass into law.  However, the underlying philosophy implies that Missouri parents are not capable of making the right choice without a law.  Had this passed, some taxpayers would have been denied the use of our public schools if they had chosen to not purchase this new vaccine, which may prove to be more harmful than helpful.

If you would like to read the House bill, click here: Vaccination Requirement.

According to the World Net Daily, anaphylactic shock," "foaming at mouth," "grand mal convulsion," "coma" and "now paralyzed" are a few of the startling descriptions included in a new federal report describing the complications from Merck & Co.'s Gardasil medication for sexually transmitted human papillomavirus – which has been proposed as mandatory for all schoolgirls.

The document was obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by Judicial Watch, a Washington group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, and it has details of 10 deaths just since September.

"Given all the questions about Gardasil, the best public health policy would be to re-evaluate its safety and to prohibit its distribution to minors. In the least, governments should rethink any efforts to mandate or promote this vaccine for children,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
