Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

Last week, I kissed my son, Ben, daughter-in-law and only grandbaby goodbye.  They moved to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster as a result of the federal government’s decision to shut down the Air National Guard unit at Lambert, where Ben was employed.  He would have preferred to stay near here, but St. Louis just doesn’t have many jobs for crew chiefs on F-15 fighter jets.  This is a loss, not only for me, but for all the families who have built their lives in this area and now must uproot.  My heart goes out to all the members of the 131st fighter wing.  Senator Kit Bond’s office told me they tried to keep the Lambert Air National Guard unit in St. Louis, but it couldn’t be done.  God bless all our members of the Air National Guard wherever you go.  A piece of my heart goes with you.

Where Is Representative Davis

Speaking This Week?

This week I was the keynote speaker at the Foster Grandparents Award Luncheon presented by the North East Community Action Corporation.  In this program, volunteers tutor and mentor students in academics on a daily basis and also help them with physical, emotional, and mental development.

In 2007, Foster Grandparents volunteered over 32,000 hours working with children.  If you are interested in volunteering to help a child in need, you can contact Becky Fauerbach at (636) 272-3477.  Income guidelines apply.

RSVP is another volunteer opportunity for people age 55 and over. Nearly 500,000 volunteers across the country are tackling tough issues in their communities through this program.  It also offers flexibility on amount of time served and skills used, and there are no income guidelines.  Contact Mary Hutchinson at (636) 936-8023 if you are interested in this program.
