Happy Resurrection Day!

I applaud all the businesses who continue the tradition of being closed on Easter.  As we have seen an erosion of family time and traditions in our culture, it is refreshing to know that some businesses are choosing principles over profits.  As a business owner myself, I fully understand the dynamics of competition.  Yet I trust the good will we will generate by choosing to be closed on Easter will make up for any deferred sales.  There is a point where we all have to pick our priorities.  Choosing to honor God and honor our employees is a value that strengthens our culture.

This Sunday is almost the earliest Easter possible.  Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, which is on March 20 this year. This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare.

Therefore, this year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early before (95 years old or older!). Here's the facts:

  • The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913.

  • The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see Easter any earlier than this year!  As I write this, I am thinking about how cold it is outside.  Perhaps next year it will be a little warmer.

Fishing Licenses

I had an opportunity to help another constituent.  A dad came to me with a request.  His son was considered to be ineligible to vote due to mental disabilities, and he thought it would be helpful if the state had a law that would allow individuals in this category to receive a free fishing license.  While researching the law, I discovered that the Missouri Department of Conservation has a rule that allows those in such a category to fish for free without the necessity of proceeding through the murky waters of additional legislation.

The complete language of the Wildlife Code is located at Wildlife Code of Missouri.  The specific reference for this provision is located in Chapter 5 Wildlife Code: Permits 3 CSR 10-5.205 (1)(M) Wildlife Code of Missouri, published by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

If you would like a copy of the Wildlife Code of Missouri, which contains the fishing guidelines, please contact my office.

2008 Legislative Survey

Keywords: applicants, business, employment offices ...

If you are a resident of District 19, don’t forget to watch for your 2008 Legislative Survey in the mail.  The survey asks for your opinion on such timely topics as illegal immigration, adoption records, transportation funding, parental rights, term limits, labor, gambling, and state government in general.   Much of my wisdom comes from listening to your thoughts.

Small Reminder

The State Capitol will be closed Friday, March 21 through Monday, March 25 for the Easter holidays.  We’ll be back on Tuesday, March 26 to take excellent care of you!

Quote of the Week…

Holidays can be difficult for those going through hardships.  While trying to think of a quote for this week, I realized that not everybody will be having a joyous celebration with loved ones.  For some of my friends, this is their first Easter since a life-altering moment.  One of my friends lost a son in Afghanistan.  Another one was laid off after decades with his employer.  Some families have been impacted by suicide, divorce, a car accident or received bad news from the doctor.

Yet, Easter is all about turning what looks like devastation into a new beginning.  It may be Friday, but Sunday is coming.  There is a reason for hope.  This quote is for those who are having a lonely or hard Easter this year.

“Do not abandon yourselves to despair.  We are the people and hallelujah is our song.”

Pope John Paul II
